SNL Innovations Fruit Pulper

The pulper is the workhorse of any fruit processing line. It takes washed, sorted fruit and separates the edible flesh from seeds, skin and fibre in a single continuous pass.

How it works

Fruit enters the hopper and is fed into a rotating paddle assembly inside a perforated cylindrical screen. The paddles push the soft flesh through the screen perforations while seeds, skin and coarse fibre travel along the screen and discharge from the reject end.

The result is smooth, consistent pulp on one side, and clean reject material on the other.

Fruits and applications

The pulper handles a wide range of fruits with different characteristics:

  • Mango — removes the flat seed and skin; screen selected for fibre content
  • Guava — separates hard seeds from the soft flesh
  • Tomato — removes skin and seeds for smooth purée or paste
  • Papaya — gentle pulping preserves colour and texture
  • Pineapple — after peeling, the pulper extracts juice-rich flesh from the fibrous core

Different fruits need different screen sizes. Mango typically uses 0.75–1.0 mm; tomato uses 0.5–0.75 mm for a smoother finish.

Where it fits in the processing line

The pulper sits after the washing and sorting stage and before heat treatment (pasteurisation or sterilisation). In an Innofarms mobile aseptic unit, the sequence is:

  1. Washing and inspection conveyor
  2. Pulper — flesh extraction
  3. Buffer tank
  4. Steriliser (tubular or plate heat exchanger)
  5. Aseptic filler

Design considerations

  • Screen selection is the most important variable. Too fine and you lose yield; too coarse and you get seeds or fibre in the product.
  • Paddle clearance affects extraction efficiency. It is set during commissioning for your specific fruit.
  • Throughput depends on fruit ripeness and variety. Ripe mango flows faster than firm guava.
